Peanut Allergy Letter

August 29, 2012

Dear Parents,

Currently at Meadows Elementary School we have several students with severe allergies and risk of anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is the body’s reaction to an allergen leading to life threatening respiratory and vascular changes.

In several of our classrooms we have students with such life-threatening allergies to peanuts as well as other foods. Peanut allergies can be so severe that even the smell of peanut butter can trigger a reaction. Because of this, our staff has made a decision to eliminate the use of peanuts and peanut butter in all activities and crafts. Although we can not require that you refrain from sending peanut-containing snacks/lunches to school with your child, we hope that by sharing this information you will consider it when making decisions regarding snacks for your child at school. It is our intent to keep all children within the Manhattan Beach Unified School District safe and we hope that you will help us to accomplish this task.

Sincerely,

Connie Harrington
